Welcome to the BBB (Bicycling Barrister Blog)!

I've created this blog to provide a forum where bicyclists can discuss the legal aspects of bicycling- worldwide. I welcome your questions and comments, as long as they are on-topic, i.e. related to bicycle laws, ordinances, liability, insurance, police matters, etc. Welcome, and let's all ride safely!

here is the info: Today (10/31) at around 12:20 pm I was pulled over while riding my bicycle by a Torrance county sheriff on 337. We were heading north at around Juan Tomas road. I was in a group of 4 cyclists and we were ALL riding single file just to the right of the white line. He told us to get on the shoulder and stay there, then he said you guys are holding up traffic (there was no one behind us) and to "spread the word, the hammer is coming down on you guys" I guess they make their own rules out there and New Mexico State law does not apply.

There is no follow-up to this sheriff, but there should be!

These bicyclists were riding in a perfectly legal and safe manner. New Mexico law states:

§66-3-705. Riding on roadways and bicycle paths.
A. Every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable, exercising due care when passing a standing vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction.
B. Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles.
C. Notwithstanding any provision of this section, no bicycle shall be operated on any roadway in a manner that would create a public safety hazard.
